OUR WHY

In March 2018, Tony Villiotti underwent a liver transplant at Allegheny General Hospital, culminating his thirteen-year battle with NAFLD and NASH.

In 2005, Tony was informed he had a fatty liver and advised to improve his lifestyle. Over the years, the issue was occasionally mentioned but not emphasized. In 2014, he was unexpectedly diagnosed with NASH and cirrhosis, despite minimal alcohol consumption. By 2017 his disease had progressed to liver cancer.

Fatty Liver Disease Symptoms

“A VIDEO
EVERY AMERICAN NEEDS TO WATCH”

Our documentary, “Silent Epidemic: the liver disease NASH”, first aired on WQED-TV, the Pittsburgh PBS affiliate, in December 2019. We also work with healthcare companies, schools, corporations and more to show the documentary at their site and/or at events. The riveting documentary portrays the experience of Tony Villiotti and others with liver disease as a cautionary tale for those who might be at risk. Various members of the Villiotti family are in the documentary, in addition to medical personnel at Allegheny General Hospital (where Tony had his liver transplant) and other NASH patients. Please let us know if you have an interest in showing the documentary to a group.

Nomenclature Change

The American Association for the Study of Liver Disease recently announced a change in nomenclature regarding the terms nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Those terms were replaced by (for NAFLD) Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) and Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH). We will continue to use the term fatty liver in discussions with the general public but, as necessary, will provide information about the new medical terminology.

FAQs

Yes. A diet that contains a lot of processed foods and added sugars, and lack of physical activity are primary fatty liver disease causes. These habits promote fat buildup in liver cells, increasing the risk of inflammation and liver damage. Adopting healthier habits early can help prevent disease progression and support long-term liver health.

Fatigue, mild abdominal discomfort, or slight liver enlargement are common early fatty liver disease symptoms. These asymptomatic symptoms may be missed until liver function is impaired. Often, early detection is facilitated by routine screenings, even when symptoms are absent or minimal, allowing timely intervention with lifestyle or medical treatment.

Many liver disease risk factors, including obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol, may not show symptoms early. Regular checks identify these problems before damage happens. Early detection enables changing one’s lifestyle and treatment to prevent further progression of the disease and enhance long-term outcomes of liver health.

Poor diet, inactivity, obesity, and insulin resistance are major contributors to non alcoholic fatty liver disease. Good lifestyle practices, such as a balanced diet and regular activity, decrease risk substantially. Prompt modification of daily habits can prevent or reverse liver fat buildup.

Yes. Exercise improves insulin sensitivity and reduces liver fat, making it a central part of non alcoholic fatty liver treatment. Even brisk walking can decrease liver inflammation and aid healing. Combining exercise with a healthy diet enhances treatment efficacy overall.
