Our Mission…
…is to increase public awareness and provide education regarding fatty liver disease.
Welcome to NASH kNOWledge!
We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation that was established to increase public awareness of Fatty Liver Disease, which is quickly becoming a public health crisis. Based in the Pittsburgh area, we partner with other organizations across the country that have similar goals and we also speak at events and conferences throughout the country.
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney diseases estimates that 100 million Americans have fatty liver and that 20-25% of those have fatty liver disease. There are typically no symptoms associated with its onset, which is why it’s known as a silent epidemic and most people who have fatty liver disease don’t know it. As an unidentified person on the internet described it, “you’re not sick, then one day you are.” This was exactly my own experience.
The problem is real and getting worse…
The prevalence of fatty liver disease continues to rapidly grow with no end in sight. In fact, experts anticipate a 60+% increase in fatty liver disease by 2030. Principal risk factors include diabetes and obesity, both of which are also spiraling upwards in the number of cases. fatty liver is often not part of the obesity and diabetes story, and the general public is largely unaware of fatty liver disease. Media coverage of this problem has become more commonplace but it is still relatively unknown to most Americans. There have been a spate of recent articles on the subject in the national media, but the lack of knowledge of these conditions remains largely unknown.
